biography

Thomas Engel Hart came of age in the New York of the 1990s, a participant in the Lower East Side performance art scene of the time. Following studies at FIT, Thomas moved to Paris in 1997, enrolling at Studio Bercot. In 2001, he established his eponymous menswear line. Pieces from the first collection quickly began appearing in the pages of Dazed & Confused, Another Magazine, V, Self-Service and the like. An integral part of the new menswear revolution, Thomas was awarded the ANDAM prize in 2002 and, over the next three years, built a cult following for his own line while designing for Martine Sitbon as well.

Thomas Engel Hart put his own collection on hold in 2005 in order to re-launch Thierry Mugler Homme. During his three years as creative director there, Engel Hart put Mugler Homme back on the fashion radar, garnering press attention worldwide drawing a new generation to the brand. But longing for the creative satisfaction only his own collections could provide, Engel Hart re-launched his line in January 2008, once again to critical acclaim. Jefferson Hack captured the spirit perfectly where he wrote that Thomas is the kind of designer who likes to spend time creating high-end tailoring for a small and stylish clientele.
